Ktp Cafeology - Coffeee Roasting Process Automation

This Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) project is a collaboration between ASERG and Cafeology with the aim of building a bespoke innovative software-based solution for automating the coffee roasting process. This solution involves translating the nuanced expertise of highly skilled roasters into a computer-aided business process management tool. The goal is to make the operation and control of roasting machines accessible and understandable for any user, regardless of their level of expertise.
Cafeology is a sustainable coffee company dedicated to supplying ethically sourced speciality coffee. This initiative aims to digitise Cafeology’s operations, improve quality assurance, streamline workflows, and deliver actionable insights to support management decisions.
One of the project’s primary goals will be to digitise the coffee roasting process. The team will develop a recipe management system to replace the current paper-based methods, allowing precise creation, editing, and tracking of roasting recipes. Additionally, a roasting process management feature will guide operators through workflows, integrate quality control data, and provide real-time insights to management via a visual dashboard. These systems are expected to improve traceability, consistency, and oversight in Cafeology’s roasting operations.
This project is a demonstration of applied research in action by ASERG, in which techniques developed by the group are being applied with industry partners.

The Box Analogy Technique (BoAT) offers a structured, card-based approach to capturing business processes. In this project, BoAT will be adapted to map workflows such as recipe creation and production tracking, facilitating collaborative discussions and reducing ambiguity during requirements gathering.
The Business Process Model to Domain-Driven Design (BPM2DDD) methodology analyses business process models to identify bounded contexts and their relationships. It will map existing processes to define distinct operational domains, ensuring digital solutions align with the company’s specific needs.
